In 1986, American supermodel Kathy Ireland posed with a baseball bat during a Sports Illustrated swimsuit photoshoot in the Dominican Republic. Wearing a white swimsuit, sneakers and a New York Mets cap, Ireland combined the glamour of 1980s fashion photography with the country’s passion for baseball. Ireland first appeared in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue in 1984 and became one of the publication’s most recognisable models. Her career reached another milestone in 1989 when she appeared on the magazine’s 25th anniversary swimsuit cover, one of its most celebrated editions. The Dominican Republic photographs were taken on September 24, 1986, by photographer John G. Zimmerman for the 1987 Swimsuit Issue. Decades later, Ireland is also recognised for building a successful business career beyond modelling, making her one of the notable figures to emerge from the magazine’s history. 📸⚾✨
Filming this reel with my kids 🧒🏼🐶 in the same room was an adventure in itself. You should see all the bits I had to cut out because the video was getting too long. And GOD FORBID we post an Instagram video that’s too long! 😱 Or one without a fantastic hook in the first two seconds. Or something so ridiculously funny, shocking or entertaining that the entire world simply MUST stop scrolling. Nooooo. We are all supposed to be creating PROOOOOOOFESSIONAL content, perfectly edited, brilliantly executed, endlessly entertaining, preferably with a plot twist and a standing ovation at the end. 👏🏼😂 And then, IF we’re lucky, IF the stars align, IF the algorithm wakes up in a good mood, it might actually decide to show our masterpiece to a few people. Because apparently, creating something and sharing it with the people who chose to follow you is no longer quite enough. 🤣 So here’s my thought. You might as well post whatever the heck you want. Because the algorithm’s willingness to share your content is about as unpredictable as the mood of a perimenopausal woman. I SAID SOME WOMEN. NOT ALL. Before anyone comes for me. 😂😂😂 Anyway, here’s a reel. I made it because I felt like making it late in the afternoon when both kids 🧒🏼🐶 were at home. What a revolutionary concept! Love you! ❤️
Comment “links” to get my picks 💎Follow me to cut through the hype! 1989 photo is from Vogue, April 1, 1989: a Cashmere-Cashmere sweater at $250, which is $672 today (Minneapolis Fed inflation calculator). Quince’s $45 tee is 100% Grade-A Mongolian cashmere. Same “100% cashmere” on the label, 37 years apart. Affordable luxury finds! Shop my picks on ShopMy through my link in bio @fond.losangeles. Imports hit 8.3 million by 2000 and peaked at 11.4 million in 2005. The price is what importers declared at the border, before duties and markup, so retail marks up the price above these figures. Mongolia’s goats grew 3.8× from 1990 to 2009 (Mongolian National Statistical Office, via Human Ecology, 2013). The IMF ties the herd growth to cashmere prices. Degradation and the grazing programs: UN Convention to Combat Desertification, Northeast Asia report, 2019. Loro Piana’s description: 100% cashmere, gauge 14, made in Italy. Walmart’s description: 100% cashmere body, trim 98% cashmere/1% spandex/1% other, imported. Quince, for comparison, lists grade, origin and gauge. Gauge is stitches per inch; higher is finer. Gauge a matter of design, not quality. Same LED panel, same room, same ISO and shutter speed for all seven. A red sweater blocks light by color alone, so I measured how much each one reflects and divided it out. It’s a rank, not a measurement: the top three were close.
