Kilian Midnight Espresso - From Golden Hour to After Dark

For years, gourmand fragrances have been my weakness. But somewhere along the way, I started growing tired of how often they seemed to share the same predictable base.

Kilian, however, holds a special place in my collection. It's one of my favourite perfume houses, and I admire their way of handling sweetness. Their fragrances develop beautifully on my skin, with a distinctive character that feels neither synthetic nor generic.

So when Midnight Espresso appeared, I was excited, but also a little nervous. I wanted to love it so much that I was almost afraid of being disappointed. I ordered it directly from the official website, a rare blind purchase for me these days.

And I fell for it from the very first spray.

To my nose, Midnight Espresso is more of a sweet perfume with gourmand nuances than a typical gourmand. The coffee is unmistakably there, but beautifully rounded, without any sharp bitterness. There's a gentle nuttiness woven into the composition, and then comes the vanilla. Warm, smooth and incredibly addictive. Everything blends together so naturally, retaining that unmistakable Kilian character.

Despite its name, I find Midnight Espresso equally suited to daylight and evening hours. The season matters far more than the time of day. I imagine it in the colder months, when wool sweaters become a daily ritual and the warmth of coffee and vanilla feels especially welcome. Its mellow, velvety richness is deeply cocooning, carrying the dark warmth of roasted coffee into autumn's muted afternoons and the intimacy of long winter evenings.

The bottle is another pleasure. Beautifully sculpted glass reminiscent of a crystal whisky tumbler, finished with a satisfying magnetic cap. In the sunlight, the amber-coloured liquid catches fire. Among roasted coffee beans, the same bottle settles naturally into the shadows.
