Romanian is one of the few major Romance languages spoken in Eastern Europe, alongside its more geographically distant relatives, Italian, French, Spanish, and Portuguese. The language developed from Latin following the Roman conquest of Dacia in 106 AD. Despite centuries of Slavic, Hungarian, and Ottoman influence, Romanian retained its Latin roots. Today, Romanian is spoken primarily in Romania and neighboring Moldova, which officially recognized Romanian as its state language in 2023. Following the fall of communism in 1989 and Romania's entry into the European Union in 2007, millions of Romanians moved abroad, establishing large communities in Italy, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Interestingly, the UK looks relatively unchanged on this map, despite having a substantial Romanian-speaking population. According to the 2021 census, around 472,000 people in England and Wales spoke Romanian as their main language, making it the second most common non-English main language after Polish.
