The night his best friend got killed, he was supposed to be there. He went home instead. He still doesn't know why.
VH$ is a Mexican-American music producer from the San Gabriel Valley, the first to create a full hip-hop album sampled entirely from VHS tapes. But before Billboard, MTV2, and BET, he was a kid in Section 8 housing who never heard I love you from his father.
His dad was a gang member. A heroin addict. Never around. His mom worked hard and did everything she could, but the streets filled the gap. By sixth grade, VH$ was tagging, smoking, surrounding himself with people five to ten years older. By his 20s, he was deep in drugs. Meth, coke, anything to numb what was missing.
He never gang banged. But tag banging in the SGV in the 90s was close enough. People got shot. People died. His best friend Yesa was killed in 2005 at a backyard party in West Covina. VH$ was supposed to be there that night. He went home instead. He doesn't know why God pulled him away, but he thinks about it all the time.
At 30 he went to jail. His son was on the way. His worst fear was becoming his father.
That fear changed everything.
He reconciled with his dad before he passed. Not for himself, or for his dad. Just so his son could have a grandfather. Loving a man who never loved him back was one of the hardest things he's ever done.
Then he went back to what had always been there: the beat machine. The VHS tapes. The samples.
Today VH$ doesn't stream on Spotify or own a computer. You can only hear his music on vinyl or cassette because that's how hip-hop was always supposed to live.
He's nearly 40. He pays his rent off his passion. He's not surviving. He's thriving.
