Parties on planes, trains, trams, and inside bakeries only tell part of the Amsterdam Dance Event story.

The festival, known as ADE, wrapped its 30th edition on Monday. Over three decades, it’s grown to take over Amsterdam each October with more than 1,300 DJ sets, pop-ups, art installations, panel discussions, listening sessions, and merch drops across 300-plus venues.

Music is still the main draw for an estimated 600,000+ attendees. Increasingly, though, cross-cultural programming has turned ADE into something like the Paris Fashion Week of music: five days that spotlight music’s links to nightlife, art, design, streetwear, and even coffee, along with its role in shaping subcultures and building communities.

We braved the city’s October wind and rain to capture the sights, exhibitions, community gatherings, shows, and sounds. Here’s how we spent our week.
