I WAS BULLIED (when I was 6 years old). And that became the reason why I spent the last 25 years of my life feeling a sense of discouragement and disregard towards myself. The confidence & camera friendly personality grew in me after a long time of living in solitude and reading books, I owe everything to reading and today I would like to talk about a book that somehow made me live through everything that I once buried; hereโ€™s to โ€˜Heavenโ€™ by Mieko Kawakami There are a lot of books that include the harrowing glimpses of emotional cruelty youngsters have to go through all because they were normal (as everyone else). The novel centres around the life of an unnamed, 14-year-old boy, who is relentlessly tormented by his classmates due to his strabismus (lazy eyes). He was mocked and labelled as โ€œeyesโ€ a derogatory term. One day he receives a note stuck to his bench saying-โ€™We should be friendsโ€™. As a victim herself, Kojima is also someone who is continuously tortured for her deliberate messiness and appearance. The narration is set in a place that was socially designed to make us feel less awkward in social gatherings and feel as part of the community (School), but the continuous humiliation and nerve-chilling terror break us from even visiting. โ€˜Heavenโ€™ is non-conventional as it relies on its philosophical debate about the nature of suffering, power and flawed human nature; it recites an uncertainty between both protagonists but at the same time it also defines a sense of distinction between their respective suffering and response. Kojima embraces suffering as an existential truth, which could be understood as she remains wearing dirty clothes and adopting her persecution as a badge of spiritual purity, But on the other hand, he sees it as a form of degradation and terror.
