Bats are masters of echolocation, which means they emit very high-pitched sounds and listen for the echoes bouncing back from objects. By measuring how long the echoes take to return and how they change, bats can estimate an object’s distance, direction, size, shape, and even texture. Some species can detect insects in complete darkness while flying at high speed, which is basically hunting with sound instead of sight. Not all bats echolocate, and the ones that do can adjust their calls depending on what they are doing. When closing in on prey, many produce a rapid “feeding buzz” of increasingly frequent calls to track the target more precisely. So a bat chasing a moth is essentially running live sonar calculations in its head while flying, which makes missing a doorway suddenly feel much less impressive. Like this content?
