JD was as real as they come. Miss them rummy nights. He was the first one to call me PULLEY MAMMOTH…. I still use that name any time i sit down at the card table… ride outs, cruises. She said it out loud, on camera, outside the church, with the Republican standing beside her. “I’m a proud Democrat, and I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate.” Haley Stevens woke up on Sunday morning, decided to go to church, and walked into Perfecting Church in Detroit beside the man running against the nominee she had endorsed after the August primary. She had not yet cast her own ballot. She told the reporters she would vote for Rogers. The woman who lost the Democratic primary by one point, who was told on Friday to stay away from her own party’s events, stood at the microphones and un-endorsed the winner on camera, forty-eight hours before the election. The words were not angry. They were final. She said El-Sayed had made clear she was unwelcome, that he neither needed nor wanted her participation, and that at some point you have to look at who is standing for country. She framed it as opposition to hate and to the outside group’s advertisement blaming Israel for the price of groceries, the advertisement she had demanded El-Sayed condemn. She said she stood with her party and was booed off the stage. She said her own household was divided, her mother voting for Rogers, her father for El-Sayed. And she said the policy that mattered to her, investing in Black-owned businesses, was the policy Mike was going to take on. A proud Democrat, endorsing the Republican, in front of the cameras, on a Sunday morning, because the church was where she decided to stand. The reversal is total, and that is why it matters. In August she lost by a whisker, endorsed the winner, and promised to do whatever he wanted on the trail. In October she demanded an apology and a condemnation. On Friday he uninvited her. On Sunday she endorsed his opponent, and said she still expects ninety percent of her votes to go to Democrats, and that Chuck Schumer will become majority leader. She did not leave her party. She left one man, in public, with a microphone, two days before the vote, and she did it in the church where Detroit’s Black voters worship. El-Sayed said none of it matters. The endorsement says otherwise. Michigan will say the rest on Tuesday.
