A #Catholic priest in #Ecuador has died after a massive wooden crucifix fell on him while he was celebrating Mass, in a tragic incident captured on a livestream. (SWIPE) The victim, Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, was leading a service at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Guayaquil, Ecuador, on October 17, 2026, when the large crucifix mounted behind the altar suddenly detached from the wall and struck him. The incident occurred approximately 27 minutes into the livestream, leaving churchgoers screaming and rushing to help. The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed the priest’s death and released a statement expressing condolences to his family, friends and religious community. Sánchez Molinari was a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer and served as the church’s parish priest. The footage has since circulated widely on social media, sparking shock and grief among viewers. Authorities have not yet publicly established what caused the crucifix to detach from the wall, and the circumstances surrounding the accident remain unclear.

In light of the tragic events of this October, the production of the monthly First Friday event is pausing. We are taking time to work with the City of Las Vegas, law enforcement, and all necessary partners to reorganize and reimagine what the important future steps for First Friday can and should look like moving forward. We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of the young person who was killed and to everyone who was affected, and remain devastated and heartbroken over this unacceptable tragedy. We know that this has an impact on local artists, musicians, vendors, and local businesses, all of whom we are incredibly grateful to for bringing their unique gifts, talents, and services together to celebrate local creativity for the last 24 years, and for the light and positivity they have supplied in creating a vibrant and important local arts community. As the community heals, we additionally encourage everyone to continue supporting their local artists and one another in this extremely difficult time.
