Lyrics from Lockdown transforms lived experiences into a powerful story of resilience, hope, and justice.

Written and performed by Bryon Bain and directed by Delroy Lindo, this performance used spoken word and music to spark meaningful conversations about incarceration, education, and second chances.

Thank you Carnegie Hall, Hudson Link, and Sing Sing for making this incredible event possible.

Wearing clothes that aren’t you: Joe Locke syndrome

l’ve been questioning why individuals, such as famous actor Joe Locke, have a hard time looking comfortable and natural in their clothes. Using sociology I have come to the conclusion that Bourdieu’s Habitus is the underlying reason as to why individuals seem less natural in some environments rather than their regular environments.

In 2008, I was 33 years old. I had no career and was living in Dumbo with our 5-year-old son. As a creative, I was home alone a lot. Filled with love, but also feeling isolated and without direction.

I began using what I had around me to create, to express. And that was HOME. I would cook a meal, craft a table, labor over the flowers, the lighting, the music. Hyper-focused on every element, every detail, to set the scene.

I had no idea what I was doing or where it would lead. I only knew that creating an all-encompassing sensorial world around the table felt so right. But more than anything, it gave me a sense of purpose and connection, while unearthing a passion I didn’t know existed.

I could never have imagined that this instinct for world-building would become a career that fulfills me every day. Or that I would one day travel the world, designing within some of the most iconic and architecturally significant spaces. I only knew what fueled me, and I put one foot in front of the other.

I am beyond proud of this work in Vienna in an apartment designed by Adolf Loos, but perhaps even more proud of the journey that brought me here.

I share this because I am proof that you can find yourself, your passion, and even your career later in life. You don’t always need to know where you’re going. Sometimes you just need to follow what makes you feel alive, even when you have absolutely no idea where it might lead.

I am so lucky to have made my Broadway debut in “The Tempest” with the incomparable Patrick Stewart… And to work with him again at the glorious Guthrie Theater in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf”. But lucky most of all to have called him mentor and friend. He will be missed by us all…

“We are such stuff
As dreams are made on, and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep… “

Rest peacefully, dear Sir.
