For the first time this winter, UCLA welcomed students from the Female Community Reentry Program to campus to take a Fiat Lux course alongside undergraduates through the Prison Education Program. Studying trauma and its impact on communities, inside and outside students learned from one another as peers, discovering shared experiences and perspectives.

“These courses open doors for people who might never imagine themselves at UCLA,” Dr. Jocelyn Meza, a UCLA College alumna and assistant professor-in-residence of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, who was inspired to teach a course at Victorville Prison thanks to the enriching experience she had in a Fiat Lux course as a UCLA undergraduate.

Congratulations to the UCLA students and the students at Victorville FCC on completing the FIAT Lux, The Power of Lived Experiences, Community, Healing and Mental Health (Winter 2026) 💙💛

This course brought together UCLA students and students at Victorville FCC to learn alongside one another, and we are proud to celebrate this shared accomplishment.

Meet PEP’s very own hero, @BryonnBain!

Bryonn Bain is an artist, activist, and educator whose work powerfully connects the arts, justice, and transformative learning. As Founding Co-Director of the UCLA Prison Education Program (@uclaprisoned), Bryonn has helped build pathways to higher education for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated students across Los Angeles.

Through hip hop theater, spoken word, and storytelling, his work confronts mass incarceration, uplifts lived experience, and reimagines what justice and liberation can look like. His performances and teaching continue to inspire dialogue, critical thinking, and possibility inside classrooms and communities alike.

Bryonn’s leadership reminds us that education and creativity are deeply intertwined forces for change.

Meet PEP's community shero, @susanburtonla!

Susan Burton is a transformative leader in the movement to end mass incarceration and the founder of A New Way of Life Reentry Project (@anewwayoflifela), one of PEP’s valued community partners. After experiencing profound personal loss and spending nearly two decades cycling through incarceration, she turned her lived experience into a powerful force for change.

Since 1998, her work has helped women rebuild their lives through housing, legal services, employment support, and leadership development. Her impact has earned her national recognition, including a CNN Top 10 Hero designation.

Through her memoir, Becoming Ms. Burton, she continues to inspire, advocate, and redefine what justice and healing can look like.
