Lactose intolerance is caused by a deficiency of lactase, an enzyme produced in your small intestine. Without enough lactase, your body cannot break down or absorb lactose—the sugar found in milk and dairy products.

Because the lactose isn't broken down, it passes into your large intestine (colon), where bacteria ferment it. This process creates excess gas, fluid, and bloating, resulting in symptoms like cramps, diarrhea, and nausea.
