“Why didn’t she come forward?”

Honestly, have you seen what happens when women do?

Does anyone else feel total exhaustion at being a woman in this news cycle? Because watching the coverage of the Cornell Seven allegations, and the way this woman has been discussed, has been gut-wrenching.

And it’s not just Megyn Kelly, it’s the wider media debating her supposed promiscuity, whether she wanted a threesome, how much she drank, as though somewhere in her behaviour we might find a reason she didn’t deserve protection.

Even if a woman consents to sex with multiple men, that is not a free pass for any man to join in. Consenting to one person, or one act, doesn’t mean consenting to everyone and everything, and consent can be withdrawn at any point.

I’ve seen far less outrage about the way those young men allegedly spoke about her in the group chat, the entitlement, the dehumanisation, the idea that a woman could be advertised as “free pussy upstairs”, than I’ve seen debate about her sexual choices.

How have we ended up scrutinising her supposed promiscuity instead of asking what kind of culture makes men think they can speak about girls like that?

Something I explore in my book is how early victim blaming starts, when we teach girls to limit their freedom to accommodate male behaviour. Be careful what you wear, don’t drink too much, don’t walk home alone, as though preventing male violence is a responsibility women have failed at when someone hurts us.

Of course we want women to be safe, but there’s a difference between offering advice and using it afterwards to excuse the person who chose to hurt them.

Even if someone leaves their car unlocked, that doesn’t give anyone permission to steal it. Yet with sexual violence, people seem determined to find something a woman did that makes what happened to her understandable.

And every woman watching this coverage is also watching what might happen to her if she speaks, how her life could be picked apart, her sexual history debated, her appearance mocked, while people worry about the futures of the men she’s accused.

Then we ask why women don’t come forward, as though the answer isn

Will miss you❤️‍🩹
