🎬Chithram (1988)
Director: Priyadarshan
Chithram begins as a light-hearted comedy but gradually turns into one of the most emotional endings in Malayalam cinema.
Kalyani is the daughter of a wealthy NRI. When her fiancé learns that she will not inherit her father’s wealth, he abandons her just before marriage. Her father, who is ill and unaware of the breakup, is coming to visit. To avoid hurting him, Kalyani and her guardian Kaimal hire a carefree stranger named Vishnu to pretend to be her husband for a few weeks.
Vishnu and Kalyani constantly quarrel at first, creating many humorous moments. However, as they spend time together, they slowly develop genuine affection and begin to fall in love.
The film takes a dramatic turn when a mysterious man arrives. It is revealed that Vishnu is actually an escaped prisoner sentenced to death. Through flashbacks, we learn that he had escaped prison to earn money for his child’s medical treatment.
By the time Kalyani realizes how much she loves Vishnu, fate intervenes. Vishnu must return to prison, and the film ends with a heartbreaking farewell as he is taken away while Kalyani watches helplessly. The ending leaves their love incomplete, making the film unforgettable.
