Laquan Williams, 42, also known as “ChinaMan,” has been sentenced to 16 years and 8 months in federal prison for his involvement in multiple bank fraud schemes. According to federal prosecutors, Williams recruited individuals to impersonate bank customers using fake IDs to withdraw money, transfer funds, and deposit stolen U.S. Treasury checks. One stolen check alone was allegedly worth $13.9 million! Authorities say the Treasury-check scheme was intended to steal over $30million, with at least $1.15 million in actual losses. Across the broader case, the schemes caused at least $1.8 million in losses. When federal agents arrested Williams in May 2024, they recovered over 1,000 stolen or altered checks, hundreds of counterfeit IDs, equipment used to manufacture fake documents, and two loaded firearms. Williams had previously been sentenced to over five years in federal prison for similar crimes in 2018 and was still on supervised release when he allegedly committed the new offenses. He pleaded guilty to bank fraud conspiracy and aggravated identity theft before receiving his latest sentence.
