The timeline wasted absolutely no time correcting this one after a viral post made a pretty wild claim about race and identity. Shared by @mak_eyee alongside a photo of an athletic woman dressed for flag football, the caption asked when anyone had last seen a Black Asian person before declaring that she was somehow the “first and last.” Unsurprisingly, people immediately jumped into the quotes and replies to point out just how inaccurate that statement was. Users quickly brought up the millions of people with both African and Asian heritage, along with Afro-Asian communities that have existed across different parts of the world for generations. Famous names including Naomi Osaka, Jhené Aiko, and Tiger Woods were also mentioned as obvious examples that challenged the idea behind the original caption. Not everyone was interested in turning the post into a geography and demographics lesson, though. Plenty of people admitted that the woman’s athletic build had completely stolen their attention, sending the conversation in an entirely different direction. Between the corrections, jokes, celebrity examples, and people simply admiring the photo, the post quickly became another case of the internet turning one questionable caption into a much bigger conversation. Whether the original claim was serious or intentionally exaggerated for engagement, it definitely succeeded in getting the timeline talking.
