when i was 19, many tattoos ago, @annakoblish and i recreated public image-shifting photos of controversial female celebrities… i implore you all to look into the origins of these photos and read up on these women’s stories, the conjecture and the gossip and the journalism and their own personal testimonies… pictures only depict part of the tale but god are they compelling! in these original photos i see four women who could not anticipate the roads their public receptions went down… amanda, the comedic wunderkind positioned at the top of her class… roseanne, the boundary pushing every-mother comedienne reframed for the first time as sexy… dana plato, desperate to bust out from her good-girl kid star packaging into a new landscape defined by her “brat pack” contemporaries…and sean young, trying to take an embarrassing veil-pierce and career fumble in stride but only managing to dig an inescapable hole for herself. to me these images are the ultimate “before” photos, precipitating personal and professional upheaval and collapse. strangely, these photos were taken of me before i experienced a major upheaval of my own, as drug addiction and chronic illness and psychosis would soon come to define my circumstances and interfere with my work. i was lucky to recover. i was lucky that people’s perverse fascination with my pain was equally lucrative as it was destructive, and that i had a then mostly dormant spiritual channel to these kinds of stories brewing within me, the truth of which would finally dawn on me in the moments i needed them most. i am beholden to the blueprints both good and bad laid out for me by these four women and many more like them. i am but a palimpsest of scrawlings atop the documents they assembled for my reference. i am shocked by how much i always identified myself with these types even before my material circumstances at all reflected theirs, and i am even more shocked at how many parallels i uncover as i age and as my own fame metastasizes. in these photos of me i see a girl who had no idea how large and how real shit could get. i still have no idea what will become of me. but here, frozen in their frames, my muses didn’t know either.
