“Tatia’s practice never adhered to a single discipline or identity. Drawing, painting, gardening, journaling, collecting: these activities appear less as separate pursuits than as different expressions of the same attentiveness to the world. Even her close friend, Isabella Ducrot, did not remember Tatia carrying a camera. What she remembered instead was a particular sensitivity to detail, a formal elegance, an eccentric precision and care, a sober, synthetic, fundamental, yet deeply personal style. She had great care for things, yet remained fleeting, secretive, and reserved. Looking through the negatives, one senses that photography was, for Tatia, ultimately a way of confronting the world and perhaps the best means of mediating between her reserved inner life and a mesmerizing outside world. Maia’s first encounter with the archive transformed a forgotten box into something unexpectedly alive: journeys, relationships, gestures, fragments of observation, unfinished narratives. Yet the care with which the negatives were organized complicates the idea of secrecy. Contact sheets bear edits and markings; certain images survive as small proofs; folders are meticulously divided by place and subject.”
