remembering brodsky
limited edition artist’s book

I discovered Joseph Brodsky and Watermark in winter of 2003.

His book became my map on my first journey to Venice. I tried to see Venice through Brodsky's words.

I photographed, I wrote a poem for him.
I made an artist's book, remembering brodsky. Mark Strand wrote a text.

I have had a few exhibitions of this work over the years. Stanford University acquired a series of black & white silver gelatin prints as well as the book for their collection.
Other institutions as well including Yale.

I am just back from a few days in Venice.
While there Brodsky was on my mind!
His words about Venice, the watery firmament, are inked forever on my soul.

field notes & traces

field notes & traces reflects my experience during my residency with Hauser&Wirth
in 2016.

My experience of Somerset touched me deeply.

Early morning forays into the surrounding countryside allowed me to discover farmer’s fields, dairy farms, historic sites, such as
King Alfred’s tower, shrouded in the mist.

It was early winter.
The fields were fallow.
There was a lull and feeling of quiet
and transition in the air.
Many of the trees leafless.
The ground muddy.

Somerset is a region, 1610 square miles,
which has been inhabited for centuries.
And yet, time stands still.
Echoes of the past in the present.

A region caught between history
and fairy tales.

This work has yet to be exhibited.

I produced a limited edition artist’s book
of 30 copies, following the residency.

I wanted to tell you a little about myself.
I have been working in photography since 2001
following a 17-year career in the film industry.

My photographs and artist’s books touch on themes of displacement and memory, place and time, traces.

I am inspired by artists and writers and the places where they lived.

I began writing poetry in 2014 inspired by the painter, Cy Twombly.

I published my first trade edition book,
I NEVER KNEW CY TWOMBLY, Bassano in Teverina, with Nearest Truth Editions in 2023.

I recently wrote and published my first exhibition review. My article about the Paolo Roversi exhibition at the Palais Galliera in Paris
appears in CIEL VARIABLE 128.

I have produced 25 limited edition artist’s books since 2001. I have had 40 solo exhibitions and participated in many group shows. My artist’s books and photographs can be found in over 50 international Institutional and Museum collections including MoMA, the Menil Colkection, the Getty Research Institute, the Library of Congress, the National Gallery Washington D.C., and the National Poetry Library London to name but a few.

Venice, Rome, Cy Twombly, Joseph Brodsky,
Mark Strand, Robert Frost, Andrew Wyeth, Van Gogh, and Rodin have all brought inspiration to my work.

Jessica Houston’s new exhibition, Water, Water Everywhere / Nor Any Drop to Drink,
at Art Mur is for me an Alchemy of the Unknown.

Jessica leads us into unknown territory through photographs, colour field paintings. and poetry.

Inspired by the famous poem, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner,by British poet, Samuel Coleridge, she offers glimpses
of the vast desolate Antarctic landscape
of ice and snow and silence.

Jessica was a passenger on an icebreaker in 2018 and 2024 pursuing her passion and curiousity about this remote territory.

Her photographs are luminous, making us imagine and feel the cold and loneliness of this inaccessible landscape. A landscape of her imagination.

A lone albatross, the sun reflecting on snow, a majestic iceberg, a research station.

Her research led her to explore the shape, colour and composition of snow itself.

The video and reading of the poem by actor, Richard Burton, was a key to the presentation for me bringing together the poem with images in a poetic way. The images mesmerize while Burton’s melodious voice drones us into a state of suspension and meditation.

The ambitious exhibition, shown in three spaces, leaves us inspired and curious to know more.

Bravo, Jessica!
