Two marches, one city, both claiming to save democracy. Thousands gathered at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on November 1 for the INDIA bloc’s “Chalo Dilli” rally, demanding the removal of CEC Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the SIR of voter rolls. Rahul Gandhi alleged the 2024 election was “stolen”, saying the fight would be through “love, not hatred”. Former Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said Bengal is a “victim of SIR”, and Congress Chief Kharge vowed to keep fighting till Kumar is removed. The BJP called the rally a ‘flop show’. Meanwhile, across the city, the BJP held its own “Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao” march marking the anniversary of the 1984 anti-Sikh ri@ts. Delhi CM Rekha Gupta, who joined the march, asked those “who carry a copy of the Constitution in their pockets” whether what happened in November 1984 was not a “murder of democracy”. She said thousands of Sikh families are still waiting for justice and asked if the Gandhi family had ever spoken up for them. She accused the Gandhi family of having “murdered democracy time and again” and said that by picking this date for the rally, they had committed the same kind of “heinous crime” as in 1984.
