Nearly 20 years after the release of Borat (2006), Sacha Baron Cohen has publicly apologized to the people of Kazakhstan for his controversial portrayal of the country. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, the British actor and comedian explained that Borat Sagdiyev was never intended to represent Kazakhstan or its people. “I want to apologize to the people of Kazakhstan for the first time ever, because Borat has got nothing to do with Kazakhstan,” Cohen said. He also revealed an interesting detail about the character’s origins. Before becoming the fictional Kazakh journalist audiences know today, Borat was originally developed as an Albanian character for the BBC. His nationality changed several times during development, including a version from Moldova. When the character eventually moved to HBO, Cohen needed another country. He chose Kazakhstan simply because he believed Western audiences knew very little about it. The decision caused controversy. Kazakhstan’s government strongly criticized the character, and officials threatened legal action in 2005. Around the release of the 2006 film, the country also launched an international advertising campaign to challenge its fictional portrayal. Cohen recalled receiving complaints from the Kazakh embassy and acknowledged that the objections were understandable. He emphasized that he respects Kazakhstan’s people and culture and never intended to cause them harm. The comedian maintained that the film’s real target was ignorance and prejudice, particularly the willingness of people to believe outrageous claims about a country they knew almost nothing about. Two decades later, Borat remains one of the most recognizable and controversial comedy films of the 2000s, continuing to raise questions about satire, stereotypes, and the line between comedy and cultural representation. What do you think about his apology nearly 20 years later?
In 2023 I was fully bedridden on Halloween. But I love dressing up, so my husband @thatdudeoverthere1985 made me into the wicked witch of the East 🧙 Still my favorite costume. Watch till the end for my second favorite! #longcovid #halloween #mecfs #chronicfatigue

🕊️ 28.10.26, heaven gained an angel. My Grandfather, my Godfather, my second father. The man who loved me for 37.5 years, but the man I loved my entire life. Kind, loving, solid + loyal. He was ALL about FAMILY. From sharing wine with him at the dining table from five years old, to dancing to rock + roll in the sun room. Ice creams + almost every home Essendon game at the MCG. Family summers at the caravan park in Portarlington + the time we went to Malta together. 🇲🇹 Nannu taught me the value of homegrown. He loved showing off his produce + getting us to eat it. And yes, Nannu, you had the best lemons. It’s probably because you peed on the tree. 🍋 He didn’t just provide us with love. He provided us with a home. I’d kick + scream because I didn’t want to leave his + Nanna’s house. Sleepovers with our cousins were mandatory! Always smiling, never short of a story. Even when the last months were hard, he still laughed + told jokes. Strong-willed + always standing his ground for what was right. They say you take after your Godparent + if that’s true, I know I most certainly got those qualities from him. Thank you for being the best Nannu, Godfather, second dad + friend for 37.5 years. I know you’re drinking wine + dancing to the Rock Box collection somewhere else. Charmaine. x P.S. I’m so sorry for eating your award-winning vegetable while you took a nap. You never let me live that down, but we laughed. P.P.S. Frankie boy will always be our boy. 🎵
