Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday introduced flute artist Samar during a press conference in Delhi, where he criticised the alleged use of force by police against protesters demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Gandhi described the authorities’ response to the growing protests as the use of “danda” (sticks) and presented the flute performance as a symbolic response to it. Samar played the devotional song “Vaishnav Jan To” on the flute, conveying the message of responding to violence with love and peace. The artist also spoke about his own experience with the police. According to Hindustan Times, Samar alleged that he had been detained and beaten by police personnel. He claimed that protesters had been threatened with sticks and stones and that their phones had been snatched and formatted. These allegations have not been independently established. The press conference comes amid continuing demonstrations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations surrounding the revision of electoral rolls. Opposition parties and protesters have questioned the Election Commission’s handling of the process and demanded Kumar’s resignation, while the controversy has intensified political tensions in the capital. Rahul Gandhi has backed the protesters and criticised the police response, framing the flute performance as a contrast between force and peaceful resistance. The song, associated with Mahatma Gandhi and the values of compassion and non-violence, added a symbolic dimension to the press conference. The episode brought attention to protesters’ allegations of police excesses and the opposition’s demand for accountability amid the ongoing demonstrations.
WATCH: More than 100 women gather on a Las Vegas rooftop and unleash nearly a full minute of screaming as outrage over the Cornell 7 case reaches a boiling point. The coordinated scream is an act of solidarity with "Jane Doe," the alleged victim at the center of the case, but for many women there, the frustration runs much deeper. "This happens to so many women on a daily basis, unfortunately, and no one is taking it serious. No one's batting an eye at it," participant Sidney Stanton says. Organizer Alexis Cardiel, who says she is a victim of abuse herself, describes the gathering as a safe space for women to release anger and frustration they've carried from their own experiences.

Singapore is investigating companies potentially responsible for forest and peatland fires in Indonesia that have contributed to cross-border haze, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said on Thursday (October 15). On Friday (October 16), Singapore’s National Environment Agency (NEA) issued preventive measure notices to seven companies in Indonesia after identifying indications that fires on their land may have contributed to the haze affecting Singapore. The companies were instructed to take preventive measures, including deploying firefighting personnel, stopping burning activities, and submitting action plans to prevent further fires. Singapore also said it may take enforcement action against companies found responsible for causing transboundary haze under its Transboundary Haze Pollution Act.
