In this final moment, you can see the pain written across Lol’s face.
After reflecting on her life in Jamaica, she speaks about the painful contrast between the welcome British tourists received when they visited the island, and the treatment many Jamaicans faced when they came to the UK.
Back home, Jamaicans showed kindness freely. They gave their time, showed visitors around, and extended real hospitality. So when British tourists encouraged them to come to England, promising opportunity and welcome, many believed them.
But for Lol, and so many others of the Windrush generation, the reality was very different.
Her final advice to the next generation carries the weight of that lived experience. Not bitterness, but truth. Not anger, but memory. A reminder that history is not just something we read about. It lives in the faces, voices and silences of those who survived it.
