This post capture two craftsmen using a traditional woodworking technique to carve a functional staircase or massive ladder directly from a single raw log.
Crafting Process
Working on a steep hillside, the craftsmen use manual tools—specifically a rope saw or long-handled blade—to shape the wood without the need for power machinery.
Shaping: Each section of the massive log is carefully and evenly cut into deep step shapes.
Precision: The cuts follow a consistent rhythm and pattern to ensure a stable, functional set of stairs that integrates naturally into the landscape.
Support: The log being carved is often supported by other logs or bamboo poles during the shaping process to keep it at the necessary incline.
