Wie sollen die Euro-Geldscheine künftig aussehen? Die Europäische Zentralbank (EZB) präsentiert 10 Entwürfe für die geplante neue Banknotenserie und befragt nun die Bürger:innen. Bis zum 21. September kann online auf der Internetseite der EZB abgestimmt werden. Parallel dazu wird ein unabhängiges Meinungsforschungsinstitut eine separate Umfrage mit denselben Fragen bei einer repräsentativen Stichprobe von Bürger:innen des Euroraums erheben.

Ende des Jahres will der EZB-Rat dann endgültig einen Vorschlag auswählen. Bis die Menschen die neuen Banknoten in Händen halten, kann es aber noch dauern – vermutlich bis 2028/2029. In einer Vorauswahl für die Motive der neuen Banknoten hatte die EZB bereits Anfang vergangenen Jahres 2 Themen festgelegt: „Europäische Kultur“ sowie „Flüsse und Vögel“.

Euro-Banknoten seien mehr als ein Zahlungsmittel, sagte EZB-Präsidentin Christine Lagarde bei der Vorstellung der von Grafikdesignern gestalteten Vorschläge. Es sei der Notenbank wichtig, die Stimme des Volkes dazu zu hören: „Die Banknoten gehören Ihnen.“ Der Euro ist gemeinsame Währung von rund 358 Millionen Menschen in 21 Ländern der Europäischen Union.
