‘The doubt was screaming at me, so I gave it the middle finger’
The title basically sums up the long battle I had with this painting. Originally was a big 200x150cm painting but it didn’t seem to just want to be a painting in the end so I ripped it up as I do with a lot of my works and began piecing and puzzling fragments together on the floor of my studio until I finally got to this composition. It took me a long time to listen to what could either be called my intuition or listening to the work (same thing?) and facing my doubt head on, fully obliterating what wasn’t working to push it to where it could go- jumping into the deep end, the unknown, potentially destroying what could have been good is always scary and my initial resistance wins out for a while, but when I go for it, it sometimes actually works out.
Oil, acrylic, oil stick and thread on canvas, 150x150cm, 2026.
