این مرد نیکولو پاگانینی آهنگساز و نوازنده ویولون اهل ایتالیا بود؛ نابغه‌ای که مهارتش آن‌قدر فراتر از استانداردهای زمان خود بود، که بسیاری باور نمی‌کردند یک انسان بتواند چنین بنوازد.
کم‌کم شایعه‌ای عجیب شکل گرفت؛ می‌گفتند او روح دختران جوان را تسخیر می‌کند (چون از بعضی آهنگ‌هایش صدای جیغ دختران شنیده می‌شد)، با شیطان پیمان بسته و قدرتش از دنیای ماوراست.
اما تاریخ چه می‌گوید؟
واقعیت این است که هیچ سند تاریخی یا علمی معتبری وجود ندارد که نشان دهد پاگانینی توانایی فراطبیعی یا تسخیر روح داشته‌است. این افسانه‌ها بیشتر محصول ۳ عامل بودند:
اول؛ تکنیکی که کسی قادر به توضیحش نبود.
او از روش‌هایی مثل پیتزیکاتوی دست چپ، پرش‌های باورنکردنی و اجرای قطعات روی تنها یک سیم ویولن استفاده می‌کرد؛ تکنیک‌هایی که بسیاری از نوازندگان آن دوران حتی تصورش را هم نمی‌کردند.
دوم؛ ظاهر غیرمعمولش.
پژوهشگران امروز احتمال می‌دهند پاگانینی به اختلالی ژنتیکی به‌نام سندرم مارفان یا مبتلا بوده‌است؛ که می‌تواند باعث انگشتان بسیار بلند و انعطاف‌پذیر شود.
سوم؛ فضای خرافی اروپا؛ آن زمان هر پدیده‌ای توضیح‌علمی نداشت به شیطان نسبت داده می‌شد. به همین دلیل حتی پس از مرگ پاگانینی کلیسا تا مدت‌ها اجازه نداد جسدش در گورستان مقدس دفن شود!

Only a few minutes into the performance, the audience is spellbound; some are in tears, others are crying out with excitement, and there are even reports of people fainting. This man was Niccolò Paganini, the Italian composer and violinist—a genius whose skills were so far beyond the standards of his time that many could hardly believe a human being could play like this. Gradually, a strange rumor began to spread. People claimed that he could possess the souls of young women—because some of his compositions seemed to contain the sound of their screams—and that he had made a pact with the Devil, drawing his powers from the supernatural. But what does history tell us? The truth is that there is no reliable historical or scientific evidence that Paganini possessed supernatural abilities or could possess souls. These legends were largely the result of three factors: First: a technique no one could explain. He used techniques such as left-hand pizzicato, astonishing leaps, and playing passages on a single violin string—techniques that many musicians of his time could hardly even imagine. Second: his unusual appearance. Some modern researchers have suggested that Paganini may have had a genetic disorder such as Marfan syndrome, which can be associated with unusually long and flexible fingers. Third: the superstitious atmosphere of Europe. At a time when many phenomena had no scientific explanation, the Devil was often blamed. This is why, even after Paganini’s death, the Church refused for years to allow his body to be buried in consecrated ground.
