I want to know in what world you tell strangers on the internet some shit you supposedly want to tell a friend of over 30 years before you tell the actual friend? Especially when you know theyโ€™ll see it. Holy Passive Aggressive Bull๐Ÿ’ฉBatman. This is what Black women mean when they say theyโ€™d rather just figure it out alone than ask for help, not because strangers will engage in gaslighting, finger pointing and whataboutism we expect that but because your own folks, so called friends and relatives will use your obstacle, challenge or stumble as a โ€œI told you soโ€ opportunity or project their own narratives and use your shit to validate that they made the right decision. This wasnโ€™t about me or concern for me because this lady is the type of lady who speaks directly and is not afraid of conflict, she could have reached out and said this to me FIRST. This was about using my vulnerability to pay herself on the back for making a different choice. But letโ€™s tell the whole truth, donโ€™t prop me up as some downtrodden charity case who has been abused and doesnโ€™t know when to call it quits while she spins her wheels. Tell of the successes that have fueled me and validated why Iโ€™ve had stamina for the last 15 years. And speaking of which, Friend, I cannot recall you ever congratulating me publicly or privately about any of them. Curious.

He was listing women like items at a sari sale. Watching that clip I kept thinking this could have been me. Orthodox family. Biodata number announced on a mic. Married at 25, two kids, as long as my rotis were round. Instead my family asked me what I wanted. And then let me answer. I thought that clip was extreme until I attended a community matchmaking event last month. Big screen. Girlsโ€™ profiles projected in front of the entire community. Age, weight, complexion, measurements. Families huddled together, pointing, zooming in, commenting. Every profile was a real woman with a job, a personality, dreams. And not one person in that room asked what she wanted. Standing there I called my very annoying family and thanked them. Because they never made me feel like my worth depended on fitting someone elseโ€™s idea of a good wife. Not every woman gets that. And until she does, we will keep having this conversation.
