In a major ruling on religious conversion and caste-based reservations, the Supreme Court on Thursday, October 15, held that individuals converting from Hinduism to Islam or other religions cannot automatically claim reservation benefits based on their previous caste or social status. A bench comprising Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Shree Chandrashekhar upheld a Madras High Court judgment, ruling that social backwardness associated with a person’s original caste cannot automatically be transferred to a different religious community after conversion. The court clarified that converting to Islam does not automatically make someone eligible for reservation under the Backward Class Muslim category. A person’s previous caste identity alone cannot establish membership in a separately recognised backward community. The judgment came after the Tamil Nadu government challenged a Madras High Court decision striking down a 2024 government order. The order had allowed individuals belonging to Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes, Denotified Communities and Scheduled Castes who converted to Islam to obtain community certificates under seven notified Muslim backward communities. The dispute originated when a man who converted from Hinduism to Islam sought a Backward Class Muslim certificate identifying himself as belonging to the Labbai community. After authorities rejected his application, the matter reached the courts. The Supreme Court also reiterated that under the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950, Scheduled Caste status is legally recognised only for people professing Hinduism, Sikhism or Buddhism. Conversion to another religion results in the loss of that status under the existing constitutional framework. However, the ruling does not mean that all non-Hindus are barred from reservation. It distinguishes between automatically carrying forward a previous caste-based entitlement and independently qualifying under a legally recognised reservation category. Scheduled Tribe eligibility is also governed by separate provisions.

My 4 yo has been deep in his crafting era ever since starting kindergarten, so I’ve been setting up little crafts for him to enjoy after school. This one was such an easy setup with open-ended materials and so much room for creativity 🎂🎨 I laid out a roll of paper, drew “plates” with a Sharpie, and glued down different kinds of printed cakes. At the center of the table, I added sparkly washi tape, gem stickers, pastel pom-poms, candles, and our favorite @crayola Whipped Paint, which worked perfectly as the icing to hold all our decorative pieces together! We sat and crafted together for over an hour, and it was just the kind of slow, creative connection we needed after a busy school day 😌 Optional: Cut out the finished cakes and hang them up as a sweet little keepsake 🖼️ Comment “CAKE” and I’ll send you all the materials you need to set this up 🔗🍰 #toddlercrafts #kidsartclass #toddlertime #preschoolactivity #preschoolathome

Newark, you really know how to put on for the CULTURE! 🎶✨ An evening with the Grammy Award Winning @durandbernarr was nothing short of incredible! The night started with a showcase of some of Newark’s best and brightest local talent, reminding us just how much creativity lives right here in our city. 🎨 Then we got an intimate look into the life, journey, and musical inspirations of Bernarr himself. And just when I thought the evening couldn’t get any better… THE CONCERT! 🎤🔥 Baby, that man can SANG HIS FACE OFF! Not sing. SANG! 👏🏾😂 What I love most about the @newarkarts is that it’s so much bigger than any one performance. It’s a celebration of artistry, storytelling, culture, and the community that brings it all to life. So grateful to experience these moments and witness the magic happening right here in Newark. Duran Bernard and the #newarkartsfestival2026 owe me absolutely NOTHING! 👏🏾❤️ Dress: @tangees_closet Bag: @boccinelli.co Jewelry: mostly @goldie_black_jewelry @nanateria_nanlong.haus_of_sand and @gwenbeloti (I’ll put more details in my story) Coat: Me Made using @beglarianfabrics #NewarkArts #NewarkNJ #ArtsAndCulture #onpurpose
