OPERATION LAST LIGHT DAY 2 - 20 MILES, 40 MILES TOTAL IN 24HRS
Operation Last Light is complete.
Last night I wasnt able to get any sleep, I had a resting heart rate of 90bpm. Brad was able to get some which is good.
We stepped today around 0530, and were able to fly through the first 5 miles in the early morning chill. We stopped to eat breakfast at that funky little service cabin place where you can fork into the inner basin.
The sun was most intense between miles 10-15 and muscular and mental fatigue got serious. Getting off the mountain was a big step and put us in striking distance of the finish lines. We both ran out of water completely at this point. We werent in serious danger, but lacking water compounded our fatigue and heat exhaustion.
Miles 15-20 were a testament to the fact that your body can do well beyond what your mind tells it. An exercise in physical and mental toughness. We were blessed by cloud cover for the majority of our final push, but there was nothing else that could be done but move forward.
Huge props for Bradley for completing this with me, I cant imagine how different it would've been without him. This effort was only supposed to be thirty miles, but Bradley discovered before me, on Day 1, that the Schultz Tank road was gated off, increasing our distance from 30 to 40 miles total.
Its hard to describe the emotion I felt seeing the vehicles in the distance in the last .05 of the mile. Shock and disbelief maybe, I feel changed (and extremely sore). I felt obligated to award Bradley with my unit patch that rode on my fanny pack, his effort was elite and all the more impressive as a civilian with his level of conditioning.
My wife received me when I came limping through the door with all my gear, she prepared iced tea, regular water, and a plate of fruits and some crackers. I was bedridden the first 45 minutes minimum. I am infinitely thankful, without her I wouldnt have anything to come home to.
Finally, thanks to all of you who have been following.
