A 28-year-old lab technician named Darya Shipilova has p*ssed away in Siberia following a suspected accident at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute on September 25, in which a test tube containing the Yersinia pestis bacterium, the pathogen responsible for plague, reportedly broke. She was hospitalized two days later presenting severe pneumonia symptoms and p*ssed on October 2. Russian authorities have placed the Shelekhov district hospital under quarantine and identified nearly 200 people who had contact with Shipilova for medical observation or isolation. Russia’s chief sanitary officer Anna Popova traveled roughly 2,600 miles from Moscow to the Irkutsk region in response. A criminal investigation into possible health and safety violations has been opened. The exact pathogen involved has not been officially confirmed by Russian authorities, who have publicly described it as “pneumonia of unknown etiology.” The U.S. State Department confirmed Sunday it is aware of the incident. Pneumonic plague, the lung-based form of the disease, is transmissible through respiratory particles. No additional cases of illness among contacts have been reported as of Sunday. #news #russia #disease #viral
