Stepwise periodization is a great model when the competition calendar is predictable. College baseball rarely gives us that luxury. Between fall practice, winter training, spring season, and summer ball, athletes need strength, power, and speed all year long.
That’s why the best way to build training is around progressable movements instead of constantly replacing exercises. The same lifts can shift toward maximal force or velocity depending on load, intent, and where the athlete is in the macro or microcycle. Adjust the volume so athletes can spend their training economy wisely while staying focused on game performance.
We can’t spend eight weeks chasing one quality and expect the others to wait. We have to keep developing the physical qualities that matter, all the time.
