Bloomington Police Chief Booker Hodges says authorities are dealing with a different kind of gang violence after more than 100 rounds were fired in a residential Bloomington, Minnesota neighborhood early Tuesday. Hodges said the young people involved in Somali American gangs often don’t fit the traditional picture of gang members struggling over money or drugs. According to the chief, some come from two parent homes, live in apartments costing around $3,500 a month, drive BMWs and Mercedes and legally purchase firearms. “These kids have come from good homes and they have money,” Hodges said, adding that authorities believe much of the violence is being fueled by disputes that begin on social media. Police say more than 100 shots were fired around 12:47 a.m. Tuesday along Harriet Avenue South. One person suffered non life threatening injuries and no arrests had been announced at the time of the latest reports. Hodges stressed that those involved represent only a small portion of Minnesota’s Somali American community and should not be used to characterize the community as a whole.
