Being the woman who was financially supporting her husband wasn’t exactly the conventional marriage story I imagined for myself. But I wasn’t keeping score. I wanted him to become debt-free so we could finally plan our future together without the weight of medical school loans holding us back. I thought we were building something together.

I share this not because I’m ashamed of the choices I made, but because I know how easy it is to confuse being a supportive partner with carrying more than you should.

You can be independent, generous, and believe in someone’s potential without sacrificing your own financial security. Love shouldn’t require you to abandon protecting yourself.

And if you’ve ever looked back and wondered how you didn’t see the signs, please give yourself grace. You made decisions based on what you believed was true at the time. 🤍

This isn’t tea. It’s a conversation more of us need to have—especially as Desi women, when we’re often taught to protect the marriage before we protect ourselves.

You can be a good partner and still have boundaries. You can love someone and still ask questions. Both can be true.
