In the US, 1GB of mobile data can cost around $5, while the global average is far higher than what Indian consumers pay.
In India, Jio brought data prices down to roughly 15 cents per GB, making mobile internet dramatically more affordable for hundreds of millions of people.
According to Mukesh Ambani, this price gap has created an estimated $500-$700 billion in annual value for ordinary Indians through cheaper access to digital services, communication, and the internet.
The bigger story isn’t just about cheap data.
It’s about what happens when technology becomes affordable enough for an entire population to participate in the digital economy.
That’s what democratizing technology can look like: not just launching something new, but making it accessible to people who couldn’t afford it before.
