There’s something really beautiful about people who let other people be excited about what makes their eyes light up. They don’t immediately criticize the song you love, laugh at the hobby that makes you happy, or make you defend something harmless that brings you joy. They understand that not everything has to be for them to be worthy of appreciation.

Growing up, we’re conditioned to believe that some things are better than others. Some things are more socially acceptable than others, and this often depends on popularity. We learn to rank the best music, the coolest clothes, the smartest books, the most beautiful people, and the most impressive careers. Popularity becomes confused with quality, and taste can slowly become another way of proving who we are.

One sign of maturity is losing the need to turn personal taste into a measure of superiority. Your music isn’t better because theirs is different, your interests don’t make you more intelligent, and your idea of beauty isn’t universal.

There are billions of people experiencing life through completely different eyes, shaped by different memories, cultures, emotions, and experiences. I think there’s something beautiful about letting people love what they love without needing to rank it.

I also noticed that kinder hearts don’t judge people for who they are. Perhaps someone has an accent or can’t pronounce a word. Maybe they use the wrong word entirely. They don’t immediately see these things as evidence that someone is less intelligent, educated, or worthy of respect. They understand that we all come from different places, were taught different things, and have gaps in our knowledge.

And sure, sometimes kindness might mean privately letting someone know that they’re mispronouncing a word, especially if they’re open to it. But the difference is in how you do it. You can correct someone without embarrassing them, for example, in a group setting. You can share what you know without making them feel foolish for not knowing it.
