They call America and Europe racist, cruel and shameful, and yet they fought to live here, to become citizens here and to hold power here.

Ilhan Omar sits in Congress and Zohran Mamdani runs New York City. Both of them got further in this “oppressive” country than almost anyone does anywhere else on earth.

So the question is simple. If the West is so terrible, why is it the only place they want to be?

🗽 I created Basic Optimism to bring common sense back to the West. If you want to support this work, the Buy Me a Coffee link is in bio. Thank you for reading.

In May 2025, 22-year-old former missionary Krew Zaugg met a 15-year-old girl. The victim’s family explained that she had recently lost her grandfather and was vulnerable, looking for a friend. Even though she explicitly told Zaugg her age before they met in person, he picked her up and sexually assaulted her inside his locked Tesla.

In court, Zaugg tearfully told the judge that on the night of the crime, he had just broken up with his girlfriend and was desperately seeking comfort. He stated: "I was feeling sad, lonely and miserable. Instead of dealing with those things in a mature and responsible way, I made an impulsive decision." While released on bail awaiting trial, Zaugg reconciled with that same girlfriend and married her.

Zaugg was originally charged with rape of a victim under 16 and lewd conduct with a child. Under a plea agreement, prosecutors amended the charge to felony battery with intent to commit a serious felony, dismissing the lewd conduct charge. District Judge Michael Whyte placed Zaugg on a one-year "rider" program (retained jurisdiction) in a correctional facility. While he carries an underlying sentence of 4 to 18 years, successfully completing the treatment program within that year gives the judge the option to place him on probation instead of sending him to state prison for the full term. He was also ordered to register as a sex offender and maintain no contact with the victim for 14 years.
