Inspired by Julie Dash’s Daughters of the Dust, this Juneteenth editorial explores memory, ancestry, and Black beauty through soft drapery, earth tones, and sacred spaces, returning to what has always sustained us in difficult times: memory, community, and joy.
From the grief surrounding the police shooting of Kohen Wiley, to the pain many feel over the treatment of Karmelo Anthony and the verdict in the killing of Cyrus Carmack-Belton, these stories exist within a longer history. Yet so does resilience.
Black Americans have built, created, nurtured, and transformed this country while carrying burdens it rarely acknowledges. The contributions of Black Americans are often overlooked. Grief is scrutinized. Even joy is treated as an afterthought.
This work is a reminder that Black joy is not an escape from reality; it is evidence of survival. We are still here. Still creating. Still loving. Still moving forward. 🤎
