SOUL FOOD ~ The saying sprung about in the 1960s with the rise of civil rights moment. Black people wanted to reclaim their part of American cultural history. The term soul food has a deeper meaning though. Enslaved Africans had to make do with the limited resources they had on hand to make food for their families at that time. The term “soul brother”, “soul sister”, and “soul music were also terms used at that time (hence the song 😉).
My definition of Soul Food would be a nice warm southern meal, made carefully with love, joy, but also pain. The pain that us African Americans go through on the daily. The pain that we go through, but we just don’t have the courage to speak up. That pain that’s been in us since a kid, but we learned to just “deal with it”.
Just know you’re not alone. The product you’re seeing is a reflection of everything I spoke on. The Felton family wants to not only sell delicious food, but give you a black cultural experience worth coming back to. We’d love to see your definition of Soul Food below in the comments! We love all of y’all and stay blessed!
