A Star-Crossed Afternoon at The Imperial

There are hotels that merely house you, and then there is The Imperial. Walk up that palm-lined driveway on Janpath and Delhi rearranges itself. The traffic fades, the colonial hush descends, and you remember that this city once ran on grace, gossip and very good tea. I went in for an event organised by Visit Berlin, expecting nothing more dramatic than a well-made pitch.

Hotels like this are theatres, and the lobby is where the best scenes get staged without a script. So when a ripple of attention moved through the room, I knew before I turned around that someone worth turning around for had arrived.

It was Alia Bhatt, in town with Sharvari to promote their new film, Aplha. I had never met Alia before, and I have a rule about stars: they are usually either smaller or larger than their screen selves. Alia was neither. She was simply there, warm and unhurried, with the ease of someone who has spent half her life in rooms full of strangers and learned how to make each one feel like the only person in it.

Sharvari, of course, was a familiar face. We had crossed paths at the IIFA Awards on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, where Bollywood decamps to the Gulf each year for a weekend of sequins and stagecraft. Seeing her again, this time in the quieter grandeur of the Imperial, felt like a small, pleasant coincidence. Delhi has a way of bringing people round twice.

What struck me, as it always does, was how well the place held the moment. The Imperial has hosted viceroys, prime ministers and every film star worth the name, and it greets them all with the same unbothered courtesy. Its Art Deco corridors have seen grander entrances than ours. Yet there is something rather lovely about a chance encounter in a heritage hotel, with no cameras and no staging.

I left, as one should, a little lighter than I arrived. The film, I am told, hasn't done well at the Box Office. But I suspect I will remember the afternoon at The Imperial rather longer.
