NICOSIA — The Cyprus Peace and Solidarity Movement has called on the European Commission to intervene over settlement and demographic alteration in the occupied areas of Cyprus. The movement submitted a letter in Brussels on October 6 during meetings with Commission representatives.

According to a written statement by Şener Elcil, İzzet İzcan, and Murat Kanatlı, the letter was addressed to European Commission Executive Vice President Raffaele Fitto.

The movement argues that Turkey’s policies of settlement, assimilation, and integration threaten the survival of the Turkish Cypriot community and alter its political will. It also criticizes the Republic of Cyprus for failing to bring cases concerning settlement before international courts.

The letter cites figures relating to the demographic situation in the occupied areas, including 951,356 active mobile phone users, 228,938 household electricity meters, and 210,121 registered “voters” in 2023. The movement questions the reliability of demographic figures released by the occupying authorities.

Finally, it calls on the EU to help reunify Cyprus through a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with a single sovereignty, a single citizenship, and a single international personality.

Races rarely go exactly to plan. A huge part of ultrarunning is problem solving, adapting to changes, and rolling with the punches.

While running on constant variable terrain, one of the best ways to stay on track is to target effort pace rather than actual pace. Effort pace accounts for changes in elevation and terrain to estimate what your pace would be on flat ground at the same effort, allowing you to gauge your effort throughout a race.

I finished the 101 miles and 16,000 feet of gain in 18:15:45 with an average effort pace of 9:57 min per mile.

I used the @corosglobal APEX 4 and HRM to track my data.
