Anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota was shot dead in broad daylight in Punjab’s Mansa on Tuesday, October 13, during a confrontation at a medical store over the alleged sale of drugs. The incident was captured on a Facebook LIVE broadcast, with footage reportedly showing the argument escalating into gunfire. Four of Jhota’s companions were also reported injured in the incident.

Jhota was known for his campaign against drug abuse and the alleged sale of narcotic substances and prohibited medicines in the region. He had reportedly confronted people suspected of selling drugs and mobilised local support against the menace. His anti-drug activities had also led to disputes in the past.

According to initial reports, Jhota arrived at the medical store with associates and questioned the shop owner over alleged drug sales. The confrontation escalated, and the shop owner was accused of opening fire. Jhota was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead. The circumstances surrounding the shooting and the allegations against the shop owner remain subject to investigation.

The killing has renewed concerns about the safety of people who confront suspected drug-related activities in Punjab. The state has faced persistent concerns over substance abuse, particularly the impact of drugs on young people and families.

The incident also raises questions about how allegations of illegal drug sales are investigated and how those reporting suspected wrongdoing can be protected. However, the full motive behind the shooting and the sequence of events must be established through the police investigation.

The viral footage has brought the incident into public focus, while the killing has sparked concern in Mansa. Further details about the investigation and action against those responsible are awaited.
