There’s a reason a lot of companies would rather employees keep their salaries to themselves. When pay stays private, it’s much harder to notice when a new hire is earning more than someone who’s been there longer, or even more than the person training them. Those gaps often come down to negotiation and timing, since new hires are usually paid based on today’s market while existing employees get smaller yearly raises. Data from the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta has consistently shown that people who switch jobs see bigger pay growth than those who stay put. In the US, most private sector workers are legally protected when discussing pay with coworkers under the National Labor Relations Act, and in the UK, contract terms can’t stop workers from sharing pay details to check for pay discrimination.
