When MGM animators William Hanna and Joseph Barbera created Johann Mouse in 1953, they didn’t just make a cartoon—they crafted a brilliant love letter to the Viennese waltz. Using Johann Strauss II’s sparkling Die Fledermaus Overture, composer Scott Bradley built a lush orchestral landscape where every string swell and brass crescendo dictated the physical choreography.
Winning the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film, this sequence proves that classical masterpieces possess a universal theatricality. It remains an extraordinary collision of high art and brilliant storytelling that continues to enchant audiences of all ages.

* 2 cartons chicken broth
* 1 rotisserie chicken, shredded
* 1 onion, roughly chopped
* ¾ bag baby carrots (or equivalent regular carrots)
* 4–6 stalks celery, chopped
* 5 cloves garlic
* Olive oil
* 1 tablespoon Better Than Bouillon chicken base
* Salt
* Black pepper
* Garlic powder
* Parsley
* Pastina
* Freshly grated Locatelli Pecorino Romano, for topping

Directions

In a large pot, add olive oil, onion, carrots, celery, garlic, Better Than Bouillon, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and parsley.

Pour in 1 carton of chicken broth, cover, and let everything cook until the vegetables are very soft.

Once the vegetables are soft, blend everything until smooth using an immersion blender or transfer to a regular blender.

Add the second carton of chicken broth and stir to combine.

Boil your pastina separately according to package directions.

Add the shredded rotisserie chicken to the soup and let everything heat through.

Serve over the cooked pastina and top with plenty of freshly grated Locatelli Pecorino Romano.
