We are leaving for a “free flight trip” with Pyro and Juno tomorrow. Before we go, I wanted to answer some of the most common questions I get when I share about free flight:

1) What is a “free flight trip”? I take Pyro and Juno to fly pretty regularly near where we live but not everyone in our group can do that due to weather, lack of access to safe places to fly, etc. So once or twice a year we meet up to fly the birds together. We usually go to Utah because it is beautiful and there is a lot of open public land to fly on safely. These meet ups are called “free flight trips”.

2) Aren’t you afraid they will fly away? No. If I had any concerns that my bird would just fly away, I wouldn’t have them outside in the first place. There is a lot of training for both human and bird that has to be completed before a bird is deemed safe to “graduate” outdoors. Not every bird is safe to fly outside and that is why most of my flock do not free fly.

3) Are you worried about predators? Yes. Birds of prey are a concern. A LOT of planning and consideration goes into choosing where and when we fly to minimize risks.

4) Have you ever had to use the GPS to locate a bird? No one in the group I fly with has ever lost a bird. Occasionally, there are instances where we use the GPS but that is rare and the birds are always recovered quickly. The GPS is more of an extra layer of security rather than something we rely on.

Yes, there are risks with free flight. It isn’t for every bird or even for every person. But for me, the rewards outweigh the risks and Pyro and Juno love it ☺️
