Trina & Tamara • If you remember late 90s R&B, then Trina & Tamara are a duo worth revisiting because these sisters were doing more than just singing. Coming from a musical family with their brother the late great Jesse Powell, they had musicianship running through them, and that talent extended beyond their own records. Their 1999 self-titled debut gave us “Joanne,” “What’d You Come Here For?” their beautiful cover of “Settle For My Love” and ”29” but what makes their story even more interesting is the work they did outside of that album, from their work with Somethin For The People to them writing for artists like Olivia, 702 and Coko. These women had the pen to go along with those voices! I always think it’s interesting how some artists can contribute to R&B in multiple ways and still get overlooked when we look back at the era. Trina & Tamara were singers, songwriters, even sang background for Fantasia and Adina Howard and their brother Jesse at one point, so even when they weren’t making their own records, they were always contributing to others, and sometimes that gets overlooked when you aren’t in the forefront, but I always want to show love to my girls @adict_charmery & @tamara_powell because I just love and adore them, and they know slide 13, that’s my jam foreva! #Urbansoulsuite

a few years ago, papa san and i took a father-daughter trip to new york. over dinner at one of our favorite restaurants in the west village, i asked him, as i do every once in a while, “papa, give me a word of advice.” at the time, i felt stuck in life and had no idea what was ahead. he simply told me, “don’t ever compromise what you want in life. seek it and grasp it. don’t look back. keep moving forward.” he may not have realized it then, but those words stayed with me. life happened, and there were so many directions i could have gone. whenever i felt unsure, i came back to what he said. my mom always told me something similar: don’t force anything. what is meant for you will come to you, and it will be the ultimate blessing. little did i know that blessing would be @akiandkoichi. i never could have imagined that life would lead me here. it wasn’t even a dream i knew to dream. i left my full-time job without knowing exactly what was next, and somehow what followed became so much bigger and more meaningful than anything i could have planned for myself. and then in the midst of it all, came life/style. this was the hardest project i’ve ever worked on. if we were going to do it, it had to be done right, and there were moments when getting it to where it needed to be felt like an uphill battle. but with a lot of dedication, pushing and resilience, we made a book i am incredibly proud of. i couldn’t have done it without the people who understood that vision and gave so much love and care to it. @hazeldove, our editor at @quartobooksus , @benjoarwas, our photographer, and @studio.coolcool, our book designer. each of you brought so much thought and care to this book while understanding exactly what we hoped it could be, and i’m so grateful. last night was about family, love and celebrating everything it took to get here. to everyone who helped bring this book to life and everyone who came out to celebrate with us, thank you. it meant more than i can say. this book is for @akiandkoichi ❤️ now we’re off to new york for our press tour, and then we’ll be back for the official launch of life/style on 10/27. can’t wait to finally share it with you all.
Stop waiting, just go.
