He was in the middle of playing.

Myles threw the paper airplane. Double chased it. They’d been doing it over and over, having the best time.

And then Double dropped the airplane.

He stopped playing, walked straight over to me, and pawed my leg.

A medical alert for out of range blood sugar.

I asked Myles to check his blood sugar, and because a six-year-old checking himself takes a little longer than Mom doing it, Double stood there watching Myles… then looked at me like - Seriously? This is how we’re gonna do this? 😂

Myles finished the check.

75.

The exact low blood sugar target Double is trained to alert.

That timing is everything.

Double gives us extra time to prevent it going dangerously low. He recognized the change while Myles was completely absorbed in play, stopped what he was doing, and came to alert me.

And that is one of the things that makes having Double so incredible.

He isn’t just a pet who happens to notice Myles’s blood sugar.

He is a highly trained diabetic alert service dog, trained by an incredible program to alert to both low and high blood sugars that are out of range. He beats Myles’s CGM by 15–30+ minutes, giving us time to act before a blood sugar becomes a problem.

Myles was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at just 10 months old and he doesn’t always feel signals his body may or may not send him.

At six years old, he gets to play, laugh, throw paper airplanes, and just be a kid.

And while he’s doing that, Double is doing his job to help keep him safer.

Even when it means walking away from the game.

75. Perfect alert. Perfect timing. Perfect example of why this dog is such an incredible asset to our family and to Myles’s diabetes management. 🐾💙
