it’s timeeeee ☃️
One of the biggest blackpills of our time is that our winners are immense losers. You can look out on the streets and see all kinds of dysfunctional, drug-addled men you never want to become. But if you look up to the top of the mountain at the Tech Founders who’ve reached the pinnacle of modern success, and you’ll find men equally as repugnant and emotionally stunted. No one actually wants to “be more like Bill Gates.” People covet the Founders’ money and influence, but they see the men themselves as petulant lolcows obsessed with shaping a culture they understand only as statistical metrics. We tolerate the disproportionate wealth and power these men wield precisely because their personalities are so pathetic, taking solace in the idea that no amount of money can make them cool, the one thing that will always elude them. It’s the monkey’s paw curse of American celebrity: the more they have, the more humiliatingly they squirm under the spotlight. No one would accuse these company-obsessed men of laziness, but to what end? They drift from president to president and conviction to conviction, from one focus-grouped photo op of rehearsed masculinity to the next, from one charisma-free zeitgeist-chasing tweet to the next. Unmoored from any real passion, they’re bug people pursuing growth without a compass, the ultimate techno-subjects, autistic automatons whose personalities resemble the soulless processes of automation they relish. You could say we should never look up to billionaires, but a great deal of attention lands on these men because of their centrality to the American economy. China puts its revered scientists, architects, and political theorists on giant digital screens in public space. Our equivalent is collectively poring over the tweets of rich men we all agree are losers. We venerate wealth without limit, and the people who end up wealthy show how chasing it to the exclusion of everything else leads to a profoundly hollow existence. That hollowness follows all of us, because at the heart of American society is the recognition that achieving our greatest goal won’t bring happiness and will more likely make you a laughing stock.
Fèt Gede, the Festival of the Dead, is one of the most sacred and powerful celebrations on the Haitian Vodou calendar. Held every year on November 1 and 2, All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, it is a time when families and Vodouists gather in cemeteries across Haiti to honor the ancestors with offerings, rituals, drums, and the signature banda dance. Also known as the Festival of the Ancestors, Fèt Gede (Fèt = Festival, Gede = the sacred dead) is far more than remembrance. It is a living conversation between the living and those who came before us. The Gede, the family of lwa who guard the threshold between life and death, are both fierce and joyful. They remind us that death is not an ending, but a continuation; that the ancestors still walk with us, guide us, and strengthen us. In their presence, the boundary thins, and the community reconnects with the roots that have sustained Haiti through every trial. Often described as Haiti’s equivalent of Mardi Gras, Mexico’s Day of the Dead, and Halloween rolled into one, Fèt Gede carries its own deep truth: life and death, joy and sorrow, fertility and finality exist together. It is a celebration of resilience, of lineage, and of the unbreakable bond between the living and the dead. 📸 @verdyverna #lunionsuite #haitianamerican #haitian
