This traditional costume honors Mazu, originally named Lin Mo.
Out of deep reverence, I travelled to her temple in person and performed the traditional jiaobei, or moon‑block divination ritual, to seek her consent. Only after receiving her affirmative sign did I feel blessed to present this costume on stage.

She was born on Meizhou Island, Putian, Fujian, in 960 AD, Northern Song Dynasty. At the young age of 28, she lost her life in 987 AD while rescuing ships in distress at sea.

Skilled in reading tides and weather, she often warned fishermen of coming storms, sailed out to save people, and gave free herbal care to islanders. Legend says she once lit her own home as a beacon, to guide lost vessels safely ashore. Grateful villagers built shrines and called her “Mazu”.

Honored by emperors through centuries, her culture travelled along the Maritime Silk Road.
Her spirit — virtue, kindness and universal love — is now a cherished cultural symbol and spiritual bond for Chinese communities all over the world.
