3 months ago"A letter to the algorithm" was my second curatorial text, written to accompany the solo exhibition of the dear @kikardiniz at @carocoprojeto in 2022, titled "odeioestrogonofe"—which is also Kika’s username on TikTok. Born in 1990, the Carioca artist was nominated for the 2022 PIPA Prize and selected that same year for A Gentil Carioca’s Abre-Alas and the 13th Salão dos Artistas Sem Galeria, organized by Mapa das Artes. In a prolific body of work stemming from screenshots of TikTok videos, Kika produces paintings prepared with black gesso and high-gloss lacquer that reflect the aesthetic and dizzying speed of production and consumption of short-form videos—content that has come to dominate our attention through algorithmically personalized distribution. The text was born after a few days of immersion in the app experience (I refuse to use TikTok!), consuming content and seeing where its algorithm believed I would like to go. In this human-machine symbiosis, the machine employs decades of research in psychology, gambling, marketing, user interfaces, and artificial intelligence with the sole aim of gluing our eyes to the screen—a process inducing depersonalization, derealization, and solipsism, in which our personal identity dissolves into memes, unboxings, reactions, and other low-complexity content created with the explicit intention of going viral and carrying an extremely short shelf life. In the text's stream of consciousness, I make a series of references that are hard to grasp—either because we quickly forget what distracted us for hours years ago, or because the specific combination of these references was likely unique to my own feed, which simultaneously integrates me into an audience of millions and detaches me from my immediate, lived, physical, and community context shared with the flesh-and-blood people around me. Let’s get off our phones 🙂
